2009 World Day of soil on BFI

2nd WORLD SOIL


For the World Day for soils, the Soil Scientific Interest Group (GISSOL) and the French Association for Study of Sol (AFES) provide an update on December 5, 2008 Knowledge and soil conditions of France.
The productive use of land, its role in the use and planning, diversity, ecological services it provides remain a collective issue leading to the development sustainable. The degradation of this natural resource is not renewable in human time scales, are still ongoing: chemical pollution, erosion, declining organic matter levels in particular. The ISG

Sol was created in 2001, firstly to improve the national information on land and partly to address concerns related to damage they suffer, the importance of their duties environmental needs and their sustainable management for agriculture. After eight years they remain fully motivated and remarkable progress has been made.

In Europe, awareness of the importance of these issues has been marked by the launch in 2002 a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection and the proposal of a framework directive in 2006. Update on the progress of this draft directive will be made by a representative of the European Commission.

National responsibility for the conduct of inventory programs and monitoring implementation is entrusted to the Unit of INRA InfoSol ORLEANS, with scientific input from the IRD for French overseas territories Mer. Programs ISU Soil and their progress will be presented on that occasion, as well as their numerous applications for the sustainable management of soils, crops and our environment.
